Criminal Convictions
A conviction is a formal judgment of guilt entered by a court against an
individual who has committed a crime. An individual may be convicted by a
judge or a jury or they may entered a pleas of guilty. Convictions usually
result in some form of punishment including fines, penalties or incarceration.
They also may result in deportation.
Immigration Consequences of Criminal Convictions
The US is trying (1) to prevent from entering the US and (2) to remove or deport
almost all foreign nationals, including US permanent residents, who have a
criminal conviction on their record. Individuals who have committed “crimes of
moral turpitude,” “aggravated felonies,” who have multiple criminal convictions,
controlled substance (drug) violations, and firearms offenses will be prevented
from entering the US and, if in the US, may be placed in deportation proceedings.
